Satellite Detection

Space-based, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), with its potential for all weather detection over wide regions, has the potential to play a significant role in iceberg surveillance. This role is deemed significant whether it is in strategic iceberg detection for oil production or for wide area iceberg mapping for transportation safety.

Due to the nature of SAR and its wide area coverage, it can play a significant role in offshore surveillance. SAR has been demonstrated to effectively detect iceberg and vessel targets, and in some cases, to provide information to aid in vessel/iceberg discrimination.

SAR services involve the near-real-time acquisition of SAR frames over the surveillance region of interest to produce a detection list for integration in ice management databases. These data are then fused into an iceberg detection database for further tracking and risk analysis. If requested, specific strategic analysis, problem solving and recommendations to industry clients can be performed.

The following examples of Space based iceberg detection have been provided by C-Core of St. John's as an example of Space-based SAR capabilities.
