Ice Management

Ice Management

Provincial Aerospace has been providing ice management services to operators off Canada’s East Coast for over twenty years. Our ice management service is based on a blend of the latest proven technology and the vast experience of our ice management personnel.

Ice Reconnaissance

There are many ways to detect ice, including aircraft, satellites, support vessels and radar. The correct choice depends on the type and location of operations.

Intelligence By Air

For operations near a population base or for long-term projects, aircraft reconnaissance is often the best solution. Dedicated ice reconnaissance aircraft are capable of providing real-time ice information for both strategic and tactical ice management. Aircraft reconnaissance can also provide a cost effective way of assessing ice conditions prior to operational startup.

Satellite Solutions

If a location is remote and not easily accessible, then satellites may hold the solution. Both the Canadian RADARSAT and the European ERS 2 radar satellites are capable of detecting and mapping icebergs and sea ice in remote corners of the world. Provincial Aerospace can provide ice and iceberg distribution maps for operational support or project planning using satellite imagery.

Tailored Solutions

Depending on the location and duration of the project, there are many other methods of ice detection and monitoring available, ranging from a simple computer-processing enhancement for marine radar to a large shore-based HF radar system capable of detecting and tracking ice up to 200 miles from shore.

Provincial Aerospace is experienced with many different systems and can provide assistance in designing and implementing a detection system tailored to each individual project.

Ice Software

The Ice Data Network System is a custom software application designed by Provincial Aerospace to provide our clients with the tools to record ice information, assess risk and assist in management decisions. The system can operate as a stand-alone application or as part of a multi-operator network.

For areas subject to ice and iceberg incursions, the Ice Data Network System is the solution for safe and efficient operations.
